DC State Board of Education President Zachary Parker Announces Run for Ward 5 Councilmember

WASHINGTON (August 31, 2021) — DC State Board of Education President Zachary Parker announced today that he is running for Ward 5 Councilmember.

“It has been the honor of my life representing Ward 5 families and students on the DC State Board of Education,'' said Zachary Parker, candidate for Ward 5 DC Council. “My work has given me a front row seat to the challenges facing many of my neighbors, prior to and during the pandemic. This campaign is about thinking beyond the status quo and building healthy communities for all neighbors. We must work urgently, together, to build systems that meet the basic and essential needs of all Ward 5 neighbors.”

Parker is participating in DC’s Fair Elections Program which requires candidates to only accept smaller individual contributions in order to run an entirely grassroots campaign. He is refusing to receive support from corporations or lobbyists.

Parker used to teach 7th-grade math in New Orleans, post-Katrina, and has coached DC school administrators for the last 8 years. As the current President of the State Board of Education, he centers equity in his work and elevates the needs of DC’s most vulnerable students. He has reestablished Ward 5’s voice in city-wide education policy debates by creating the Ward 5 Education Equity Committee and helped launch the Ward 5 Education Collaborative, a non-profit whose mission is to raise and disperse funds for Ward 5 schools.

During the pandemic, Parker helped thousands of Ward 5 neighbors make a plan to get vaccinated, coordinated food drives for area seniors, and provided technology and school supplies to Ward 5 students.

Parker’s Ward 5 campaign is focused on making bold investments to build a stronger, healthier Ward 5, shaped and shared by all. His priorities include:

●     Violence prevention and community safety

●     Deeply affordable and targeted housing

●     Quality education and family health

●     Generational wealth and good-paying jobs

●     Safe infrastructure and transportation
